Burnley v Manchester United August 28th 2014 EPL 

Back in the 1900/01 season Burnley played Newton Heath in the FA Cup 1st round replay and won the game 7-1. In 1902 Newton Heath changed their name to Manchester United and the rest as they say is history.

United have just smashed the british transfer record with the £60million purchase of Angel Di Maria from Real Madrid. Burnley have spent a total of £45million in transfer fees since their formation in 1882 with their record signing being Stephen Fletcher for £3million from Hibernian in 2009.

Di Maria made his debut for Manchester United at Burnley’s Turf Moor August 28 2014 their team team cost £300 million, Burnley’s team cost £6million, the score was 0-0.

What’s left of the World Cup?

The People were great! So warm and welcoming, well meaning and enthusiastic. The country was so interesting and diverse, so vast. The politicians and the bureaucrats were ridiculous and the team so emotional and pitifully over-rated. The best football and most enjoyable tournament ever, a true experience.

Boys enter a two year scholarship straight from school living with their team mates and their host families. This period of development is a testing time for the players in physical, mental and emotional terms. This should also be a very special period of their personal development and lives in general. The motivation and rewards to succeed are very tangible but so to is the underlying fear and consequences of falling short.

DSC_0035 - Version 2Ross Wallace of Burnley FC takes on three Birmingham City defenders in the English Championship 0-0 draw at St Andrews in March 2014. The shot is ever so slightly reminiscent of the famous photo of Diego Maradona playing for Argentina vs Belgium in the 1982 World Cup, although Maradona was taking on six Belgium players.
